I’ve just read this, and I’m flabbergasted:
Noting that the White House was a no-smoking zone, Brokaw asked Obama,
Have you stopped smoking?
I have, Obama replied, smiling broadly.
What I said was that there are times where I have fallen off the wagon.
Wait a minute, Brokaw interjected,
that means you haven’t stopped.
Fair enough, Obama said.
What I would say is that I have done a terrific job under the circumstances of making myself much healthier. You will not see any violations of these rules in the White House.
Obama was often observed on the presidential campaign trail chewing Nicorette gum, which helps ease the craving for nicotine. He has tried several times to quit.
Never mind that Obama cannot give a straight answer; he’s a politician, after all. But what really bothers me: This man is supposed to be a leader. In short time, he will have control over the mightiest military apparatus of the world, including thousands of nuclear warheads. He can ruin the largest economy of the world at his will, taking the rest of the world with it. And this man is not capable of lifting a smoking ban in his own house? (And the White House will be his house, starting January, 20th. The old resident will be evicted.)
Hell, if I were president and were fond of smoking, I would make smoking in the White House mandatory!
